Julie Ivens Work Space

Julie Ivens Space

What kind of Art/Crafts do you do?
Photography is my first love, but I'm into all things creative lately I've been making collages left and right, scrapbooking, journaling, and the very occasional watercolour attempt.

Where do you create?

I have a very patient Husband who doesn't mind if I take over the living room, which is the main room in our apartment. For collaging, I end up sitting on the floor surrounded on all sides by magazine clippings, book pages, and all kinds of papers. We've got it well decorated (we've been working on it over time) with hanging paper lanterns, candles, and plants the sorts of things that help the creative process along. And music, of course.

How do you keep all your supplies organised?
I keep it simple. For my collage and scrapbooking materials, I pretty much dump it all into a nice box or two, because I know next time, I'll just dump it all out again anyways. One day I should try to get more organized, but this is working for me right now. The rest I just find space for on nearby shelves.

How do you keep yourself motivated to keep your space tidy?
I think it's easier to be creative and have a clear head in a clean space, so I try to keep my surroundings pretty and neat. That way, mess is not nagging at you or distracting from the artsy pursuits.

Any tips for how to keep art spaces tidy or organised?
I would recommend claiming some space as your own, and getting baskets and boxes that look appealing to you. If it looks nice, you'll probably be in more of a hurry to get to it.

Do you get stressed out when your space gets in a mess?
Yep. I feel like it's there, waiting for me to deal with it. It is much better to have everything looking beautiful much more inspiring that way.

If you could have your dream space tomorrow what would it look like?
If you could have your dream space tomorrow what would it look like? My dream space would have lots of windows, skylights, tall ceilings, and wooden floors. I love natural light let the sunshine in. The walls would be painted turquoise, with colourful decorations and framed art up on the walls. It would be nice to have bookcases full of creativity inducing books and magazines. Well decorated so you could get inspired just by looking around the room lots of details to notice in different and unique items, things collected from nature over time.

What is the next big thing on your wish list for your art space?
I would love to have space (even just a nice desk) to mat my photographs and frame my photos and collages without throwing everything around wherever there's room.

Do space limitations get in the way of projects you have in mind?
Not yet, but give me time, I'll find something. I normally have to go outdoors to take photos, if that counts!
