Terri O' Brien's Working Spaces

What kind of Art/Crafts do you do?
I work mostly in Textiles specifically Embroidery though I like to incorporate printed fabric and hand knitting when i can, but i am specifically studying Embroidered Textiles. I also do some painting and drawings though more for research purposes. Also i like to work on images I have photographed and edit them.

Where do you do your art/crafts?
In my college studio space, at my college home in the sitting room where my two housemates (Fashion students) also work on their projects, and i also work a small amount in my home with my parents in my bedroom there - i have a much smaller space to work in though there and rarely can get much done.

How do you keep all your supplies organised?
My supplies all have their place though I unfortunately have them all scattered around in my different work areas, mostly due to the fact i have to work in college and at home. I have two large boxes for fabric, and two smaller ones for sewing supplies. I have shelves for the rest of my supplies and a large cardboard box to hold my old notebooks

How do you keep yourself motivated to keep your space tidy?
In college its a necessity to keep my space tidy so I can find what I need so i can show my tutors, at my college home I work in our living space so I have to tidy up after myself so that we have somewhere to relax or eat, at my home with my parents it is rarely tidy mostly because no one but me is in my bedroom at home.

Any tips for how to keep art spaces tidy or organised?
Tips for keeping it tidy... hmmm.... lots and lots of storage helps.

Do you get stressed out when your space gets in a mess?
No I probably work better the messier it is while I’m working mostly because everything is lying out for me to move around and mess with.

If you could have your dream space tomorrow what would it look like?
A medium sized room with a whole wall devoted to storage and with a large board (or several boards) covering another wall that i could tack things up along with a rail or two for samples/clothes. Several mannequins some tailor mannequins and some plastic, and some head mannequins. An industrial sewing machine and an embroidery machine, and a table or two for working, along with a space for my laptop and printer/scanner.

Is there any craft you would love to do but cant due to limitations of your art space?
No, if I want to do something badly enough i will make space for it. the only reason i cant do something is because i don’t know how, I would like to use a knitting machine, but do not yet know how, I plan on enlisting the help of my fashion friends to show me how to work the one in our fashion department in college.

What is the next big thing on your wish list for your art space?
An overlocker

Is there a website for people to see or buy your art/crafts?
Not as of yet though I am planning to set up a Blog where i will most likely post some of my work, there will be an exhibition of my years embroidery at Christmas for a short while. It is still in the process of being organised.

Thanks to Terri for allowing me to publish her studio photos and for taking time to answer my questions! Thank you!
